A Blanc de Blancs from a Grand Cru known for its Pinot Noir, Verzenay. The Potences-Rochelles challenges expectation: Chardonnay planted and vinified in what is traditionally considered red grape territory. Three old plots of Chardonnay within the Verzenay Grand Cru, entirely vinified and aged on fine lees in oak barrels. Natural yeasts only. No chaptalization, the alcohol reaches 12% naturally. No fining, no filtration, no cold stabilization. A great white from a great red grape terroir, as the house declares. Rated as a crystalline expression of textured, non-austere Extra-Brut by Julia Scavo. Berliner Wine Trophy Gold 2024, Mundus Vini Gold 2024.

Tasting notes: A vigorous structure from the clay-limestone and chalk mix. Despite the solar expression of 2019, the wine keeps the Verzenay character. Decanting reveals its Blanc de Blancs delicacy, airy citron fruit and nashi pear while magnifying the Burgundian toastiness. Tense yet elegant structure, with spices, toast and a long citron fruit peel finish.

Food pairing: Outstanding as an aperitif. Also excellent with white fish, seafood, and tagliatelle with scallops.
